Goodbye Razor, Hello Laser: My Adventures in IPL Hair Removal

Let me take you on a journey.

It all started with a razor… and a dream.

Like most people, I had high hopes for smooth legs. I imagined I’d wake up, toss on a sundress, and breeze out the door like a woman in a shampoo commercial. Instead, I was stuck in a Groundhog Day loop of shaving, stubble, and accidental knee cuts.

Enter: IPL Hair Removal. Also known as Intense Pulsed Light or, as I like to call it: The Flashlight of Freedom.

🪒 The Hairy Truth

Here’s the thing no one tells you: Shaving is like dating someone who texts “U up?” at 2am.– Short-lived– Kinda irritating– And always coming back.

I was tired of shaving. Tired of waxing. Tired of being a human cactus 48 hours after using a brand-new razor.

So I booked my first IPL session.

💡 What Even Is IPL?

IPL uses light energy to zap your hair follicles into early retirement. It’s like telling your body, “Hey, you don’t need to work so hard — let’s take it from here.”

The treatment is quick, surprisingly tolerable (like being flicked with a warm rubber band on the first pulse, then just warm), and wildly satisfying. I walked out of my first session feeling like a silky goddess, minus the minor redness that made me look like I’d been lightly toasted.

🤨 What People Think Will Happen:

  • You’ll leave hairless after one session.

  • You’ll never grow hair again.

  • Your skin will glow like a glazed donut.

🤓 What Actually Happens:

  • Hair gradually starts to grow back slower and thinner.

  • You need a few sessions (usually 6–8).

  • Your skin does glow, but also you need SPF like it’s your job.

💬 FAQs I Asked So You Don’t Have To:

Q: Does it hurt? A: Nah. Maybe that first light pulse but then it's just a warm sensation.

Q: Can I do it myself at home? A: You can, but why DIY your face with a lighter brighter than the sun when professionals exist? Plus, publicly available machines are not as strong as professional, MD machines.

Q: Is it permanent? A: Think of it more like long-term ghosting. Hair might text you again someday, but not for a while — and when it does, it’s softer and less clingy.

🧖‍♀️ Why I’ll Never Go Back

It’s been a few months, and my legs are smoother, my underarms are easier to maintain, and I’ve developed an unhealthy emotional attachment to my aesthetician. IPL hasn’t just changed my skincare — it’s changed my summer.

So if you're thinking about it, consider this your sign. The razor doesn’t love you like that. But we do.
